The Hunter Water Corporation is a state-owned corporation responsible for town water supply and wastewater services in the lower Hunter valley. Hunter Water Corporation also provides treated water via a pipeline to the Central Coast Water Corporation's reticulated water supply system.
Water is extracted by Hunter Water Corporation from both surface water and groundwater sources. Surface water is sourced from the Chichester River and Williams River (Chichester Dam and Seaham Weir) and Grahamstown Dam. Groundwater is extracted from the Tomago and Tomaree aquifers.
Hunter Water Corporation's water licence and approval package consists of water access licence condition statements and combined water supply work and water use approvals (combined approvals) under the Water Management Act 2000.
The combined approvals contain rules for the operation of Seaham Weir and the pumps that extract water from the weir pool, release requirements for Chichester Dam, and access conditions to ensure the sustainable use of groundwater from the Tomago and Tomaree aquifers. There are also detailed monitoring and reporting requirements for each of the groundwater sources and surface water storages. The combined approvals also specify requirements for scientific investigations into the sustainable use of Hunter Water Corporation's groundwater and surface water entitlements.
